Claimed as a “Maritime Nation” with beautiful coastline, beaches, islands and tropical climate year – round, Malaysians are not optimizing the unique nature endowed assets. Terminology of “Yachts” and much more, the “Yachting Industry” is unknown and unheard to a majority of Malaysians. Thus, the potential to harness the global forecast (2020) USD 75 billion business will continue to slip pass, if strategic awareness and initiatives are not made known to Malaysian public of the potential lifestyle and vast opportunities in rejuvenating the maritime economy.

Current development in the Marine Engineering, Ship Repair and Naval Architecture Industry has been very challenging and highly dependent on market “demand” at the International arena. In addition, intense competition from very close neighbouring countries and the Industry “giants” i.e South Korea and China has made the Malaysian Ship Building and Repair Industry look very pale in contrast.

On the other hand, the International Yachting Industry has continued to flourish and had exponential growth during the C19 Pandemic. Regionally, Malaysia Government had initiated making Malaysia a regional hub for yachting by building marinas throughout East and West Malaysia. Having spent about RM450 million with the 9th marina completed in 2009, the yachting industry has not taken off, but back slided instead. Neighbouring that started much later, are now the Industry Leaders in South East Asian i.e Singapore and Thailand.

Upon successful completion of the Workshop, the participants are expected to achieve the following:

  • To understand the opportunities and relevance of the Yachting Industry, Tourism and Lifestyle with enrichment and enhancement of the current “Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture and Ship Repair” competence and skillsets.
  • Recognise the inherent technological capabilities (Ship Building, Maintenance and Repair) and redirect with synergy into the Yachting Industry and Lifestyle to enhance elements in real business to revive the application and relevance.
  • Would be able to act as catalyst in the Yachting Industry with resilience and relevance to enhance participation in the Yachting Industry
